Sometimes in life we fall in love with the places we travel to. Occasionally, we’re so in love that we decide to stay a little longer than we intended.

For those times where you love New Zealand but love living abroad just a tad more, there’s Expat Insurance.

Unlike most travel plans, Expatriate Insurance policies are designed for longer stays abroad and don’t punish you for not being permanently attached to New Zealand soil.

Unfortunately, if you fall into the Expat Insurance category, there aren’t as many companies that cater to New Zealand residents living overseas, however we have found a few out there for Kiwis.

If you’ve moved to New Zealand, check out our Visitors to New Zealand review.

Two of the biggest companies we’ve reviewed that provide Expat Insurance for overseas New Zealand residents are World Nomads and 1Cover Travel Insurance. Both companies will let you purchase your insurance after you’ve already left (you’ll need to select the Already Overseas plan for this coverage with 1Cover).

Since the expat community is so varied, it’s hard to give sample prices, but feel free to check out the two sites below to see what they offer.

1Cover Travel Insurance Expat Insurance

Based out of Auckland, they’re a local company backed by Allianz Global, one of the biggest underwriters in the world.

You can get a quote for 1Cover Travel Insurance online on their website, or through the quote widget below.

World Nomads Expat Insurance

Well known to the backpacker crowd and Lonely Planet travelling librarians, this Aussie company specializes in living out of a suitcase. The benefit for you is that they also provide expat insurance to New Zealand natives.

You can get a quote from World Nomads on the World Nomads site, or just use the form below to get a quote directly from them.

World Escapade Expat Insurance

World Escapade (a part of April International) has offices around the world. They offer coverage for everyone from backpackers to seniors.

You can read our World Escapade review here.

World Escapade offers both a basic emergency medical insurance plan, and a comprehensive plan for expats. The basic emergency medical insurance plan tends to be competitively prices, but the comprehensive plan was more costly than plans through World Nomads or 1Cover.

You can get a quote online on the World Escapade website.
