1Cover Travel Insurance is based in Auckland, NZ and was founded in 2003. 1 Cover is underwritten by Lloyd’s. In this 1Cover Travel Insurance review, we give you both the good and bad, and give you a quick look at the plans they offer.

Advantages/The Good

  • 1Cover Travel Insurance automatically covers 35 pre-existing conditions
  • Kids are covered free if they travel with parents or grandparents for the entire trip
  • The online quote system is fast and easy to use
  • By default, includes numerous adventure activities other policies exclude

Disadvantages/Drawbacks

  • The 1Cover company name can be a little confusing – we’ve seen it written as one cover travel insurance, onecover travel insurance, 1 Cover travel insurance, 1 cover travel insurance and 1Cover Travel Insurance. 1Cover Travel Insurance is the correct version.
  • You can’t make a claim online – you can only claim by downloading the form and sending it by mail or by email to 1Cover

The Bottom line

In our price comparisons, 1Cover consistently comes out as one of the most affordable companies for seniors, domestic, ski and backpackers travel insurance.

1Cover offers travel insurance for almost every situation. This includes regular overseas trips, domestic travel insurance, annual travel insurance (also called multi-trip travel insurance), skiing and snowboarding travel insurance, visitors to New Zealand insurance, travel insurance for seniors, and travel insurance if you’re already overseas. We look at all these policies in our 1 Cover Travel Insurance review.

You can choose between a basic policy that covers only emergency medical insurance, or a comprehensive 1Cover travel insurance policy that covers emergency medical, trip interruption and more. The cost of your policy depends mostly on the area you’re traveling to and your age.

Annual Policies

You can get a 1Cover annual travel insurance policy for travel withing New Zealand or internationally. The policies cover multiple trips of up to 90 days each. You can choose from basic emergency medical coverage only, or add on additional benefits like unlimited trip cancellation and rental vehicle access.

Domestic Travel Insurance

Even though New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) offers 24-hour no-fault personal accident insurance cover, there are still many situations where the ACC won’t cover you.
1Cover offers domestic travel insurance includes trip cancellation, personal liability insurance, rental vehicle excess, luggage and personal effects. See our Domestic Travel Insurance Review for more companies and policies.

Skiiing and Snowboarding

Standard travel insurance policies often won’t cover adventure activities like skiing an snowboarding. 1Cover Ski travel insurance covers unlimited emergency medical insurance, trip interruption, trip cancellation, helicopter rescue, piste closure. It even offers bad weather and avalanche closure benefits.

Visitors to New Zealand

The 1Cover Visitors to New Zealand plan is for non-residents who are on holiday in New Zealand. It includes unlimited medical assistance within New Zealand, unlimited cancellation, personal liability, rental vehicle excess and more.

Residents Overseas Policy

Most companies won’t give you travel insurance if you apply after you’ve left on your trip.

1Cover is one of the few travel insurance companies that offers a travel insurance policy (the Residents Overseas policy) if you’ve already left New Zealand.

Note: World Nomads also offers travel insurance if you’re already overseas and need travel medical insurance. Check out our review on Expat Insurance here.
